Blue Heron Farm: Continuing A Legacy
Farmer John Ceteras and his wife Gretchen purchased Blue Heron Farm, a magical 20-acre property in Rumsey, CA, back in 1975. Nestled in a stunning landscape, the farm offers views of the mountains on both sides of Cache Creek. Gretchen fondly describes it as a place that “makes the heart beat strong and gives cosmic energy to all who visit.” For over 30 years, John brought his finest produce to our Co-op, always arriving with his signature overalls and a beaming smile. He loved chatting with staff and customers, often offering samples of his freshly delivered goods—whether it was his sweet Navel or Valencia oranges or his juicy, ripe tomatoes. Thanks to John’s passion and care, Blue Heron Farm earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence, and our close partnership with him was something everyone cherished.
In July 2018, Farmer John passed away, leaving Gretchen to manage the farm. Although John had always called the shots, Gretchen, her son Noah, and trusted Farm Manager Orlando worked hard to keep things going for several years, supported by their local Capay Valley farming community. However, Gretchen realized this wasn’t sustainable for the long term. So she turned to her “Co-op family” for help. Our General Manager at the time proposed to the Board of Directors that we purchase the farm. By doing so, we could continue our Co-op’s legacy of supporting local farmers while preserving this incredible farm. The purchase not only allowed Gretchen to remain on her beloved property, but it also ensured that we could continue sourcing some of the best citrus around, all while strengthening our ties to the Capay Valley farming community. Gretchen called it “a magical transaction.”
We’re thrilled about the future possibilities that owning this farm presents. Orlando continues to work as the Farm Manager and knows the land intimately. We look forward to continuing this relationship and to the upcoming winter citrus harvest at Blue Heron Farm!
