Before Your Shop

  1. Think about what grocery items you normally buy packaged that can be replaced with bulk.
  2. Keep jars and containers inside your reusable bags so they’re always handy
  3. Make a list of items you are running low on

While You're Shopping

  1. Before filling up your container: weigh it on the scale provided or take it to the Customer Service Desk to get the tare (empty) weight, then write it down on a label and place it on the container. That way, when you check out, you only pay for the weight of the product itself.

  2. Write the product number (PLU) of the item you have chosen so the cashier will know what item to charge

After You Shop

  1. Grains, legumes and flours store the best in jars with tight-fitting lids. Keeping them in a cool, dry and dark place will have them last for several months or more.
  2. The fridge can be a good place to store dry bulk items, especially in warmer weather, but make sure to seal jars tightly in order to prevent moisture, odor and other flavors from seeping in.
  3. The freezer is the best place to store dry food items for long term storage. Storing dry bulk items this way will double their life expectancy and ensure optimum freshness.
  4. To discourage pantry pests, drop a dried chile pepper or bay leaf into jars of grains, beans and legumes. These are nontoxic, natural insect-repellants.
  5. Freezing grains immediately after purchase for four days is also a sufficient way to kill any pantry pests’ eggs. Microwaving the grains for five minutes will also get the job done.
