Volunteer Educator Information:
For each 4 week Course, two volunteer educators co-teach the nutrition and cooking education components using our Co-op Community Kitchen lesson plans and our Student Workbook. Additionally, a Class Assistant will be on hand for each class to provide support before, during and after class takes place. All positions work together to provide instruction to class participants, assist in set-up and clean-up of class.

The Nutrition Educator must have a strong background in nutrition, dietetics or a related field. Class topics include nutrition principles based on the Healthy Eating Plate model that provides beneficial information to support students being more informed and able to purchase and prepare healthy low-cost meals. The Nutrition Educator works in partnership with the Cooking Educator to teach nutrition lessons and assist as needed with the cooking lesson.
The Cooking Educator must be comfortable in the kitchen: as either someone who cooks from scratch often or has professional training or experience in the culinary industry. The Cooking Educator leads a highly participatory cooking demonstration, teaching students how to prepare simple, healthy, and affordable meals and sharing nutrition information for the ingredients used. The Cooking Educator works in partnership with the Nutrition Educator to teach cooking lessons and assist as needed with the nutrition lesson.
Classes meet for two hours once per week on the same day for four weeks. Classes take place anytime between 9am-8pm, Tuesday- Friday. Each week the Nutrition and Cooking Educator are expected to be at the class for the full two hours plus a half an hour prep time before class and half an hour clean-up time after class (approx. 3 hours total). We occasionally provide 2-hour single-session classes or courses that are 2 or 3 weeks in duration.
There may be additional time needed for communication with the class coordinator regarding scheduling and review of our curriculum as necessary.
Volunteers educators are encouraged to contribute to all aspects of the class, including set-up, clean-up and food preparation.

- Complete the Co-op Community Kitchen Volunteer Orientation Training.

- Observe an upcoming class
Upon attending our training, we ask that you observe one class prior to starting as a Volunteer Educator. Attending a class will give volunteers the chance to observe the way other volunteer educators teach and ask any questions you may have about the program.
- Sign up for an open volunteer position
We start new classes monthly and they are filled on a first come, first served basis. After attending our Volunteer Orientation Training you will receive information on upcoming classes and will have the opportunity to sign-up for open volunteer positions.
