Pasturebird - Reinventing Poultry Production

There is a misconception that chickens labeled as “free range” and “cage-free” and even “organic” have been raised outdoors. Unfortunately, that is not the case and poultry production has a long way to go to reach the idyllic conditions most folks envision with those labels. In 2019, 99% of U.S. farm animals were raised on a factory farm. And as our country’s cultural values continue to shift to speed, convenience and low-cost food options, Pasturebird was developed to show that there is a better way. Pasturebird’s vision is to reinvent agriculture and to lead the way to a future where factory farms don’t exist.

What began as a way for one family of six to eat better and feel better, turned into a full-fledged business to offer more access to ethically-produced, nutrient-dense pastured chicken. They’re making pasture-raised poultry more equitable, accessible, and affordable for more people. They’re completely re-imagining poultry production by moving every chicken to fresh pasture where they can forage for nutrient-dense grasses, bugs, seeds, worms, grains, and more. Raised on pasture in state-of-the-art, solar-powered mobile coops, the chickens are rotated with cattle to fresh grass on a daily basis, rebuilding healthy regenerative soils and grasslands.

Certified Regenerative
Pasturebird is a member of Land to Market, the first verified sourcing solution for regenerative agriculture. Developed in collaboration with leading scientists and researchers around the world, they’ve developed the Ecological Outcome Verification™ system, an empirical and scalable soil and landscape assessment methodology that tracks outcomes in soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function.

In order for Pasturebird to expand in a way to produce the amount of pastured chicken to reach as many people as possible at a lower price, they have started working with Ryan Perdue. Working with one of the biggest poultry businesses in the U.S. might sound like an unnatural fit, but it matches Pasturebird’s mission of expanding their ethical and sustainable way of farming, replacing depletive practices and bringing more people nutrient-dense, great-tasting chicken.

We are currently getting Pasturebird through Keller Crafted Meats, a distributor that sources humanely and sustainably raised, high-quality meats. We’ve worked with Keller for many years, knowing that each of our roles in the food chain is vital to improving the food system. With Keller’s discerning sourcing, we are able to offer nourishing meats that have been raised in a way that regenerates the land and honors the animal at a price that is more affordable than other pastured chicken on the market, while also providing a living wage to producers
